1. Jan Ullrich

Born in 1973, Jan Ullrich is a former German cyclist. He won a nickname– The Eternal Second, by winning second place five times in the Tour de France. However, Ullrich won the first position in the same tour in 1997 and the white jersey in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He has also won Vuelta a España in 1999 and the Tour de Suisse in 2004 and 2006. Ullrich has some more notable achievements where he won the World Time Trial Champion in 1999 and 2001 and the Olympic Road Race in 2000. He is a famous bicycle racer with an athletic style.


2. Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong is an American cyclist who holds a record of the most number of victories in Tour de France in 7 consecutive wins! He is one of the most famous cyclists in recent times. He also won the World Cycling Championship in 1993 and the Tour de Suisse in 2001. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with metastatic testicular cancer in 1996. He recovered from it and founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation (now the Livestrong Foundation) to aid other cancer survivors.


3. Miguel Indurain

Miguel Indurain was born in 1964 in Spain. He won the Tour de France 5 times consecutively and the Giro D’Italia 2 times in a row.  Indurain won the World Time Trial Championship in 1995 and the Olympic Time-Trial Championship in 1996. He was comparatively big to other riders – 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) and 80 kg (176 lbs) which earned him the nickname “Miguelón,” that means “Big Mig.” Interestingly, his blood circulation was faster not only when compared to average people, but also his fellow cyclists. He has the ability to circulate 7 liters of blood per minute in his body.


4. Séan Kelly

Born in 1956 in Ireland, Sean Kelly became one of the most successful and famous cyclists in the 1980’s. He is also the best Classics rider of all times. He won the Vuelta an España in 1988. Kelly also earned 4 point class wins in the Tour de France and the Giro D’Italia. To add to his victories, he won the Paris-Nice form 7 times consecutively between 1982 and 1988. He had two wins in Tour de Suisse, Paris-Roubaix, and Liège-Bastogne-Liége.


5. Eddy Merckx

Eddy Merckx, one of the most famous cyclists was born in Belgium in 1945. He became the best road cycle racer the world has ever witnessed! He won the Tour de France 5 times in 1969 to 1974 and the Giro D’Italia 5 times in 1968 to 1974. He achieved victory over the Vuelta a España in 1973. He has once won the Tour de Suisse and Dauphné-Libéré, Paris-Nice 3 times, Paris-Roubaix 3 times, Liège-Bastogne-Liége 5 times and the World Road Race Championship 3 times. Merckx is one of only five cyclists to have won all three big stage races during their career. The four others are Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Bernard Hinault and Alberto Contador.
